Danemead is an ideal Scouting backwoodsmans site, located in Hertfordshire, within easy reach of London and the Home Counties. Although it is located in Hertfordshire, it is jointly owned by the four London Districts of Barnet, Chingford, Enfield and North London and managed by a separate charity comprising representatives from all four Districts. It is set in 34 acres of mature unspoilt woodland, and part of the adjoining Broxbourne woods. The site has been granted the status of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This recognises that Danemead is an old managed woodland with diverse fungi, mosses, grasses, flowers, and (if you’re quiet) you may see the Munjac deer and many other other interesting flora and fauna, wildlife and birds.
There are numerous camping sites of varying sizes amidst the trees or on the
hillside amongst the bracken. Campfires are allowed on all sites at Danemead on altar fires that can be borrowed from the site; but not on the ground as this can cause underground peat fires. There is also a communal campfire circle which is in use most weekends!
Water is available to campers via a number of strategically positioned stand-pipes around the site. Water is pumped from our own deep bore-hole and piped to all buildings and stand pipes throughout the site.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the indoor accommodation at Danemead and has sleeping
accommodation for up to 24 people in bunk rooms (2 x 6 beds + 3 x 4 beds). People frequently ask if they can hire Uncle Tom’s Cabin but camp outside and the answer is ‘Yes’! The hire charge for Uncle Tom’s Cabin covers all camping fees for 24 people and we don’t mind if they sleep inside or out (it’s more exciting outside after all!). Of course, if your group consists of more than 24 people, we do expect you to pay camping fees for the additional people. All rooms have background heating for winter use. The troop room can be used as a dining room and/or for indoor activities. There is a newly refurbished kitchen with a commercial size gas cooker and electric refrigerators. Electric lighting is installed throughout. The hire charge for Uncle Tom’s Cabin covers all electricity and gas used during your stay.
Other Facilities at Danemead
A warden and his staff are on duty every weekend during our camping season (beginning of March to the end of November). They are responsible for managing the site, allocating specific campsites and collect camping fees. Both the warden and his crew will be pleased to assist campers in anyway possible. The wardens and crews are all volunteers coming from the four owning Scout Districts and make their way to the site on a Friday evening after their ‘day jobs’. This is why we guarantee getting onto our site by 20:00. In practice, they usually get to Danemead very much earlier and for campers, we can give you the code to our combination padlock so you can start setting up even if you get there before the warden.
New Since January 2015
Although we have always had a toilet block alongside Uncle Tom’s Cabin, January 2015 saw us open the refurbished toilet block, with showers for the first time. The toilet block has separate facilities for ladies and gents plus a totally separate disabled toilet. In both the ladies and the gents, there are two showers with free hot water, three flush toilets, and three hand-basins. In the gents, there is also a five foot long urinal.
Please note that if you are camping (rather than using Uncle Tom’s Cabin) there are no facilities for washing up in the toilet block, so please remember to bring washing up bowls etc as washing up has to be done at your camp site and not in the toilets please.
The Providore, with drinks, sweets and souvenirs, opens at least once a day depending on demand.
